Finding Evidence that God Exists

I recently watched a debate between a scientist and a religious leader. The scientist laid out his case of “evidence” that the religious leader was wrong and that the scientist’s worldview was correct. The scientist, basically, said that he found no evidence that God exists.

My mind went to the Book of Mormon when Jacob was teaching the Nephites about wisdom. He said, “O that cunning plan of the evil one! O the vainness, and the frailties, and the foolishness of men! When they are learned they think they are wise, and they hearken not unto the counsel of God, for they set it aside, supposing they know of themselves, wherefore, their wisdom is foolishness and it profiteth them not. And they shall perish. But to be learned is good if they hearken unto the counsels of God” (2 Nephi 9:28-29).

We collect evidence throughout our lives of the existence and goodness of God. Evidence that comes from answered prayers. Evidence of peace to our own hearts and understanding to our minds through the Holy Ghost. Evidence from new scriptures brought to us in the modern day as a powerful second witness that Jesus Christ really is our savior. Our Heavenly Father loves us, and He teaches us through the Holy Ghost. He has not left us alone.

I wish that scientist would give as much time and effort to collecting these kinds of evidence. They are all around us. Alma taught that “… all things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator” (Alma 30:44).

​I have collected my own evidence, and I know that there is a God and that He sent his son Jesus Christ to help us return to Him. This knowledge brings me hope and gratitude. I pray that all will seek and receive the same testimony.
