How to find an Ancestor to take to the Temple
- Log into Familysearch.org and click on Temple at the top of the page. Then click on Ordinances Ready. Select the ordinance you want to perform.
- Before clicking on Take to the Temple at the bottom of the page, click on Learn about this Person under each name.
- See how you are related to each person by clicking on “View My Relationship” at the top of the page.
- Review the box on the lower right labeled “Latest Changes.” Make sure that no changes have been made in the past couple of months by an individual. If changes were made by “FamilySearch,” they were probably made by an indexer and you can still work on the name. If changes have been made in the past couple of months by an individual, then move to another name or record. This record or name could be actively being worked on by someone else, and they may want to reserve the ordinances.
- Check for duplicates in the box labeled “Tools.” Merge or reject all duplicates before reserving ordinances. If there is not enough information to resolve the duplicate, move on to another name. Do not guess on merging or rejecting.
- Check the “Research Help” box and resolve any problems. This might include standardizing dates and places. There might be some parents who are listed as being born after their children were born, or some children’s birth dates might be listed after their parents died. If this is the case, then more research needs to be done, or you can move on to another person.
- Make sure there is a source attached to the person to prove who they are and how they are related to you. To find more records, click on any of the websites listed under Search Records.
- Check to see if the person has parents, a spouse, or children shown in FamilySearch. If they don’t have these connections listed, see if you can find out who those people are. Again, click on any of the websites listed under Search Records.
- Reserve the ordinances! Click the Take to the Temple button on the bottom of the Ordinances Ready page and then print the ordinances and take them to the temple. The temple will not print the cards for you at this time. They also don’t give the cards back after the ordinance is complete, so only print the ordinance you plan on doing. There is an expiration date on the ordinances you reserve, so pay attention to it and only reserve names if you plan on going to the temple soon.
